Where Fairy & Folk Tales Aren't Far From the Truth

Print of Medieval French Village by GregsFineArt on Etsy.
Confession time: I am a huge fantasy lover. It's one of my favorite genres to read, and always has been. I love a book that can transport me to another world; I love that feeling you get when you're reading a fantasy novel and you can almost believe in magic.

So far, though, I haven't succeeded in writing any big-scale fantasy. Fantasy poems? Yes. Fantasy short stories? Yes. But so far, my novels and novellas have been composed mostly of historical and contemporary fiction. However, I've considered trying to write a fantasy novel at some point. And every time I consider it, I think of the same kind of world I'd love to be able to create.

You can find its equivalent in series like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, or Kristin Cashore's Graceling Realm books, or the Inkheart books, or the Inheritance Cycle, or the Chronicles of Narnia; because  I absolutely adore rich fantasy worlds that stand on their own. I love fantasy realms where the setting is vaguely medieval, where a walk in the woods after dark could get you trapped in a faery ring until the end of time; the kind of world where storytellers are respected and wise, kings rule the lands and host extravagant balls, and the enchantments are tangible even through the pages. I love fantasy worlds where the fairy and folk tales are not so far from the truth.

Another good example of that kind of world are the books Ash and Huntress by Malinda Lo. Ms. Lo's fantasy world is the same kind of rich and gorgeous realm I'd love to create. Fairyland is a real place, huntresses and princes go hunting in the woods, greenwitches perform burial rituals, and Renaissance-esque festivals are held in the street. Ash especially, in my opinion, reads like an old-fashioned fairy tale, and I love it!

Add Ash on Goodreads!
Awhile back, I checked out a whole bunch of authors' websites and blogs. I was looking for email addresses; I wanted to see if I could contact some of the authors whose books I'd enjoyed. To begin with, I wanted to tell them how much I'd loved their books; but aside from that, I also wanted to ask if they would answer a question for my blog. Not a whole interview - I know most authors are far too busy to accept that many interview requests - but just a random question I could post like an interview. Malinda Lo was one of those authors, and the first to answer my interview question! Which means that today, I'm essentially posting my very first author interview. Needless to say, I'm super excited about it!

I wanted to ask something that related to her books, but I didn't want it to be the kind of question you find in the website FAQs, either. And so I asked Ms. Lo about fantasy creatures.

Personally, I have a few favorites. I adore faeries, the kind with lovely fluttering wings and tiny, delicate features. If they've got an attitude like Tinker Bell, so be it! I still think they're fantastic. I also love the ocean, and so it's probably no surprise that I love mermaids as well. Elves like the kind in the Inheritance Cycle or the Lord of the Rings trilogy are awesome, but a Narnian faun would be a great friend to have, too. And of course, I'm a big fan of mythology, so those Greek nymphs are yet another favorite of mine!

There are so many different kinds of fantasy creatures out there, and everyone has a differing opinion on which ones are the best. So I decided to get Malinda Lo's take on the subject and asked: If you could meet any one mythical/fantasy creature, which would you choose and why?

This is the answer I received:
Find Malinda Lo: Twitter | Website | Blog
The problem with meeting mythical creatures is that usually, all the most fascinating ones are very dangerous. And though I'd like to think that I'm super brave, honestly, I'm kind of a chicken when it comes to putting myself in physical danger. But there are two creatures that I do find especially interesting. The first is (you're going to groan) a unicorn. I know, I know! Every girl likes unicorns! (Unless they like zombies.) It's true, but I've always been fascinated by all the mythology around the unicorn. And maybe the unicorn is the least potentially dangerous of mythical creatures (unless you're talking about killer unicorns, like in Diana Peterfreund's books). So, a unicorn.
But I'd also really like to meet a huli jing. That's Chinese for fox spirit; in Japanese myth they're known as kitsune. They are probably extremely dangerous, because they're tricksters. I have no idea if I'd survive a meeting with a huli jing. Maybe they'd think I wasn't nearly interesting enough to do anything to. I think that would be my best hope: that I'm far too average to be of interest to a huli jing. And then I could observe them from afar, safely, before I escape fully intact.
Full disclosure: I agree. I much prefer unicorns to zombies! There's really no competition - a zombie is a brain-dead corpse that just wants to eat your flesh. Unicorns are so much better.

But back to the mini-interview - isn't that just a fantastic answer? I'd never heard of a huli jing before, but I think they sound amazing! I just love mythology; it's always so intriguing. Maybe I should start reading some Chinese myths...

Anyway, thank you so much to Malinda Lo for giving me the opportunity to post my first author interview! And to my readers, now it's your turn - what's your favorite fantasy creature?

How wonderful that Malinda Lo responded to your cool question! Unicorn would be at the top of my list too...or a pegasus! There is nothing like a book that transports you to a land of fantasy. I adore Lord of The Rings and will surely read it again someday.

For me, it's a tie between nymphs, mermaids and faeries. I think centaurs are very neat as well. And Miss Val is right, it's awesome that Ms. Lo answered your question. :D

^^ Howl's Moving Castle is a book?? I thought it was just a Miyazaki movie - its one of my favorite of his!

Great post Taylor and what a cool first interview! I write fantasy myself but I can only dream that anything I write will come close to Tolkien or Cashore.

Personally I love the story of the Inheritance Series but - after re-reading it when I was older - I wasn't all that impressed with the writing itself. Which made me rather sad lol

Fantasy lovers unite! I agree with everything you said - mediaeval fantasy settings, especially immersive ones, are the best!

For me, I'd have to say I want a dragon. I"m a coward, but I'm a cunning coward, and what better than ten tonnes of fire-breathing angry scales to keep my foes away? FLEE, SPIDERS! FLEEEEEE! *cackles*

Sorry ... anywho, awesome post!

I used to not like fantasy books but ever since a few months or so ago, I LOVE fantasy! As long as it's not too weird or complicated- like when there's half a million different species of people/animals, I get confused.

Also, I wanted to comment on your Just Another Straight Girl for Gay Rights, but the comments were deactivated. I just wanted to say I agree with you 110% and that you rock for posting that.

The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia? I love those series! I think the authors have really neat biographys, too. Unforteunately, I have never heard of the other series.

An interveiw question. Hmmm...I have never heard of that before. It is such a good idea!

I must admit though, science fiction/fantasy is not really my thing. I have certianly enjoyed different books from theis genre a lot, but my favorite is historical fiction.

Fun post!

I loves Lord of the Rings, too! I was also able to see the extended edition of the second and third movies. I like the books a lot better; the movies were good though. Have you seen them?

It's funny, because I'd rather have a conversation with a someone who lives in a fantasy realm than one of the creatures. But that's just me.

And it's funny you say this now, because I have been outlining a new novel, which is a fantasy, and like you, it's my first time really diving in and takes a lot of work and detail and craft.

Since you're an avid fantasy reader, I'd love for you to check out some of what I've done so far and see what you think!

unicorn. unicorn. UNICORN!

i would LOVE to meet a unicorn...but if i had to BE a mythical creature, i would definitely choose to be a mermaid. my favourite disney movie of all time is the little mermaid and i just really really really wanted to be ariel when i was younger. i used to get kinda sad at the part where she grows legs and leaves the sea forever. i mean, HELLO, you're a mermaid!! being a human is totally overrated.

omg, you just gave me a good idea for a post too. think i might do a disney themed post!! yay.

Girl, it's only a matter of time before people are interviewing you as an author! I love fantasy books too, almost exclusively. is that wrong? haha I'm not sure who my favorite is, Terry Brooks maybe. My favorite fantasy creature? Hmm, there are lots, fairies, pixies, elves, nymphs, I can't choose!

Sorry to hear about the controversy surrounding your gay rights post. Geeze, there's a lot of divisiveness in the world today. You'd think the ultra conservative religious people would see that and try to be more Christ-like.

Such an interesting post! Sometimes I wish I was more interested in Fantasy. I just could never get into it. I love how passionate people are about it.
That was so cool that the author emailed you back! I may try that with an author haha. Great post and so glad you turned on comments again!

I know Paige!! I wish I enjoyed fantasy more. I mean, I do read and like some fantasy books/movies (LOVE Lord of the Rings and The Chroncles of Narnia), but it is not my favorite. The idea is so much fun but the reality is that I'm a historical fiction kind of person.

Hi Miss Val! I know, isn't it fantastic that I heard back from a published author? I was so excited. :) Fantasy books are definitely favorites of mine, and I LOVE The Lord of the Rings - books AND movies! Such an epic trilogy. I hope you enjoy rereading the trilogy someday!

Thanks, Jessica! I thought it was pretty cool, too. ;) And yes, mermaids ROCK!

No, I haven't read the Howl's Moving Castle book, Ruby, but I’ve heard of the movie. Maybe I should try it out sometime...and yes, dragons and unicorns are both cool!

Nymphs, mermaids and faeries - ALL good choices, Annika, I agree! (Also, the centaurs in Narnia/Harry Potter are awesome, too. :)

Thanks, Katie! I agree, I could only dream of writing fantasy as rich as Tolkien or Cashore. I thought the Inheritance Cycle was rather like LOTR when I read Inheritance recently, but I still like it. :)

Haha, I think my sister would agree with you, Charley...does it keep away spiders? Then BRING IT ON! ;D

I'm so glad you're discovering fantasy, Rachel - it's such a fabulous, magical genre! ;) And thank you so much for letting me know about my gay rights post; I’m so glad you agree. <3 Hugs!

Yes, 4readin, LOTR and Narnia are both awesome! Like you, I also love historical fiction as well. :)

That's funny, Dia - of all times for me to write about fantasy! Perfect synchronicity. ;) I'll try and shoot you an email soon!

Unicorn and mermaid...good choices, Maya! ;) It would definitely be amazing to be a mermaid. I love the ocean. ;) And I LOVED your Disney post, so glad I could inspire it! :D

Nope, that's definitely not wrong, Laurie! Haha, fantasy rocks. ;) And so do fairies, pixies, elves and all that sort of fae you listed! Love it!
Also, thanks so much for the support regarding my gay rights post; it means a lot to me. <3 Love ya, bloggy buddy!

Thanks, Amanda! I'm so glad you like my mini-interview. ;) Sending you a big hug right back! <3

Thanks, Paige! I know, people who read fantasy are usually pretty passionate about it. ;) Then again, I guess most people who read a certain genre are probably passionate about theirs!
Good luck if you decide to email an author!

Hugs, all!
